Being the driest state in the United States, large tracts of land in Nevada are still uninhabited desert. Known as the gambling capital of the USA and a state where a variety of entertainment options abound, Nevada came into the limelight in the mid-nineteenth century when large deposits of silver were discovered here. It remains a major mining center for minerals, gold being the most extensive currently.
The most popular tourist destinations are Las Vegas and Reno.
The public higher education system in Nevada centers around the University and Community College System of Nevada (UCCSN). The colleges under the umbrella of this body also include one main research institute and a state-sponsored college. Some of the universities in Nevada governed by the Board of Regents are the Great Basin College, Western Nevada Community College and Truckee Meadows Community College. Close to a hundred thousand students, local and international, study in Nevada in the various graduate institutions.
