Mississippi is a state with strong historical roots and an eventful past. A major player in the Civil war of the late nineteenth century, relics from this significant era adorn well-maintained museums and battlefield parks. Mississippi is also the birthplace of the most famous rock 'n roll musician, Elvis Presley, and the musical style, Blues. Music is revered in the state, with the Blues Archive of the University of Mississippi the largest of its type in the world.
The system of higher education in Mississippi has a vast range of academic programs, from specialized courses in the sciences and arts to excellent research projects. Under the state university system, there are eight major institutions but those wishing to study in Mississippi can also choose from colleges situated in a number of satellite locations dotting the state, that also include a medical school.
