Help: How to use this map
The land of the Cajun culture, Louisiana is home to many water bodies that crisscross the state, with the Mississippi river being the largest. Slow streams and lagoons, like the one made by the Ponchartrain Lake, are the locations of popular tourist resorts and offer excellent fishing and hunting. The bustling cities of New Orleans and Layfette also serve up plenty of cultural activities, with dancing being a favorite, especially during the famous festival of Mardi Gras in February.
As with most other states, higher education in Louisiana comprises of both private and public colleges. Louisiana State University (LSU) is the major public institution; its previous campus is now the University of New Orleans. Prominent among private colleges are Tulane University and Loyola University. Universities in Louisiana are widely acknowledged in the USA, and indeed the world over, for their significant contributions in the areas of petrochemical production and study of crude oil refineries.
