The University of Maryland, in College Park, is a major public research university located on 1,500 acres of land along the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. high-tech corridor. The University is a short drive or metro ride from the center of the nation's capital, Washington, D.C.
Vibrant, ethnically diverse and rich in culture, the city is home to federal agencies, global corporations, and national and international non-profit organisations. Along with numerous museums, national landmarks, parks, restaurants and shops, D.C. is also the home to many professional sports teams, including the Washington Redskins (football), Nationals (baseball), Capitals (ice hockey), Wizards (men's basketball), Mystics (women's basketball), and DC United (soccer).
About 40 minutes north of College Park is Baltimore, Md., one of the East Coast's 'renaissance cities.' The dramatic restoration of the centuries-old harbour area created Harborplace, an expansive pedestrian promenade featuring shops, restaurants, the acclaimed Maryland Science Center, and the National Aquarium in Baltimore.
Maryland is a state that offers every kind of natural beauty, from the Chesapeake Bay and ocean beaches to the mountains, lakes and rivers of its western counties. Sailing, thoroughbred racing, skiing, hiking and camping are a few of its features.
The city of College Park is a true college town, with dozens of eateries, shops, clubs, and diversions just for students. Neighboring towns offer multiplexes showing the latest movies, shopping malls for all your needs, a national park, a beautiful lake, and restaurants for when your parents come to town.
