The following student accommodation options are offered at the University of Maryland:
On-campus accommodation
The 8,250-bed residence system at the University of Maryland consists of both suites and apartments. Each apartment has a fully equipped kitchen, furnished living room/dining room, two baths and usually four bedrooms for six students.
Suites are like apartments, just without the kitchen and dining room. Each suite has a furnished living room, one to three baths and three to five bedrooms for four to eight students. Suites for about 1,000 students are located in the South Hill Community near the Chapel and South Campus dining room.
Each unit has a carpeted living room, bedrooms and hallway. The bathrooms (and kitchen areas in apartments) have tile floors. The apartment’s kitchen has a full-sized refrigerator, range/oven, sink with disposal, and cabinets.
Rooms in several residence halls were designed or modified to meet the needs of students with a range of physical disabilities. Housing applicants are expected to provide documentation of any disability, physical ability, or mental, medical or physical condition for consideration by Disability Support Services and Resident Life staff members.
There is no on-campus housing specifically for student veterans, graduate students, or students with spouse, partner, children or family members living with them. The on-campus residence halls accommodate male and female students in separate wings or floors of traditional “dormitory-style” residence halls and in separate apartments or suites. Most rooms are doubles or triples. Single bedrooms (for one student) are assigned solely to continuing residence hall students based on a seniority system.
Preference in assigning students, including veterans, within the 8,250-bed residence hall system is given to full-time degree-seeking undergraduate students. Part-time undergraduate students and graduate students are eligible to apply for this housing, but should understand that typically not all full-time undergraduates who apply can be accommodated.
Off-campus housing services
The Off-Campus Housing Services at the University of Maryland:
There are two all-graduate student apartment communities on University property. The Graduate Gardens and Graduate Hills communities are owned by the University of Maryland and managed on the University’s behalf by a property management company. A separate application and leasing process applies for these apartment communities.
Information about additional housing options in nearby communities is available from the University’s Off-Campus Housing Services and Graduate Student Life staff members. To search for housing options, please start by clicking here, where an online database can be used to match housing criteria you select (such as type of housing and price range) to currently listed/available rental housing in College Park and surrounding communities.
Availability of residence hall space is very limited for graduate students. All requests are initially placed on a waiting list. If space becomes available, graduate students are moved off the waiting list and assigned a room and roommate.
