Ranked highly among the UK’s elite universities and global polls for research excellence, The University’s reputation for world-class research was further enhanced with the 2008 results of the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), the UK’s definitive guide to research quality and excellence. According to these results, The University of Nottingham is currently ranked seventh among the Top British Universities, with 27 research areas featured in the UK Top 10.

Likewise, in the Times Higher Education research quality league tables, 16 of the institute’s disciplines feature in the UK Top 10.

According to The Virgin 2007 Alternative Guide to British Universities, The University of Nottingham leads with a 91 per cent excellent rating, and is one is the most employer-friendly universities in the world.

The Hallward Library, in the centre of University Park, is considered to be one of the UK's finest library buildings. Its four floors house the arts, humanities, law and social sciences collections. The University archives can also be found here, with records of the University, staff and student societies and the Students' Union collected since the opening of University College, Nottingham in 1881.
