The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, founded in 1899, is part of the University of London. As a research-led post graduate medical school, it aims to contribute to the improvement of global health.
The School provides a blending of national and international focus in teaching and research in the areas pertaining to health such as clinical, population, laboratory and social sciences. Thus the school provides a multidisciplinary environment tightly knit by a common mission under a single entity.
Students find London a stimulating and compelling place in which to live and learn, such that time spent studying in London frequently proves a life-shaping experience. The School is located in the heart of London, immediately adjacent to the University of London campus and the British Museum. Students benefit from the facilities and events at the University of London Union and the Student Representative Council.
The School offers master’s courses taught in London and via distance learning. For some courses, there is also a facility of ‘blended learning’ - a mix of London-based and distance learning units.
The diversity of the School's students and staff is exceptional; over 3000 Masters (London-based and distance learning) and research students come from over 120 countries and staff from about 45. The fusion of staff and student experience provides a rich environment for students not only to learn from the staff but, importantly, to learn from each other. Alumni work in over 167 countries and many hold prominent positions in health ministries, universities, hospitals and international organisations around the world.
The School has witnessed significant expansions in the recent years in research and distance learning programmes. Some of the excellent facilities available at the School are the library, wireless network, and computing facilities.
The School won the Gates Award for Global Health in 2009. The award was established by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to recognise organizations that have made an outstanding contribution to improving global health, especially in resource-poor settings. The School is both the first academic institution to win the award and the first British winner.
