Introduction

Swinburne University of Technology has a strong reputation in Australia and overseas as a provider of career-oriented education and as a university committed to research.  The Good Universities Guide 2009 ranked it the best university in Melbourne for teaching quality and cultural diversity, and one of the top universities in Melbourne for graduate satisfaction.

The University maintains a sound technology base and important links with industry, complemented by a number of innovative specialist research centres which attract a great deal of international interest.

From its establishment in 1908 in Melbourne’s eastern suburb of Hawthorn, Swinburne has grown from being a local provider of technical education into a multi-disciplined, multi-campus provider of higher education of national and international significance.

Swinburne’s vocational emphasis and close links with industry ensure that its courses keep pace with developments in the commercial and community sectors.  This means that students graduate workforce-ready and industry-aware.

Swinburne’s five Melbourne campuses- in Croydon, Hawthorn, Lilydale, Prahran and Wantirna- are equipped to provide students with a state-of-the-art study experience.

Career-oriented study:
Swinburne provides students with the skills and knowledge that will help them find employment in their chosen field.  This expertise is developed in an exciting, inclusive and enjoyable learning environment.

Undergraduate students are exposed to a range of experiential learning activities, no matter which course they choose.  They receive feedback on the development of generic skills while becoming increasingly capable in their chosen discipline.

Swinburne’s unique learning model provides a range of development opportunities, such as:

  • Electives Plus– complementary studies to diversify a student’s career profile
  • Winter and Summer Terms– allowing students to speed up or spread out their studies
  • Capstone Projects– final year industry-oriented major projects to prepare students for transition into professional practice

A broad choice of courses:

At Swinburne, students can choose subjects from a diverse range of disciplines.   The University is one of the few Australian institutions to offer courses at both TAFE and university levels, from apprenticeships to PhDs.   By studying in an Australian context students are able to broaden the focus of their home degrees.

Students can choose from courses in the areas of applied science, business and innovation, design, engineering and technology, health and human services, computing and information technology, digital media, social sciences and the arts.
