Introduction

At La Trobe University, we aim to create infinite possibilities for our students, staff and the community through education and research.

Starting with just 552 students in the year 1967, La Trobe was the third University to open its doors in Victoria, Australia.  Today, it has more than 26,500 students including over 4,900 international students from 90 countries.

The institution has been one of Australia's pioneering universities for 40 years, and is renowned for its academic excellence and research achievements.  Over 130,000 students have attended La Trobe University to date, and have gone on to achieve great things giving La Trobe its well deserved reputation.

La Trobe has a total of seven campuses. Its regional campuses extend from Mildura in far north-west Victoria, through Bendigo, Shepparton, Beechworth and Albury-Wodonga. Courses are offered to international students at the Melbourne (Bundoora), Bendigo and Albury-Wodonga campuses.

La Trobe University is internationally recognised with strong partnerships, teaching, research and exchange links with over 250 institutions across more than 40 countries.  La Trobe has five faculties offering a wide range of courses, research programs and study options.  All faculties support and promote excellence through focusing on the student experience, quality teaching, and the right balance of theoretical and practical knowledge.  They have extensive research programs and the institution is a member of Innovative Research Universities, Australia, a group which collectively attracts more than A$340 million in funding per annum.

The choice of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and research programs include the following: arts, education, business, law, accounting and management, health sciences, science, technology, engineering and IT.

  • La Trobe University was recently ranked the top Victorian university for student satisfaction (Sweeney Uni Student Report, 2009).
  • Recently awarded A$123.7 million Federal Government funding to establish the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science in north Melbourne and the La Trobe Rural Health School in Bendigo.
  • La Trobe University was ranked among Victoria’s top three Universities in 2007 by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Index.
  • Innovative curriculum reform in the Faculty of Health Sciences leading to the introduction of four-year combined bachelor's and master's degrees in eight key disciplines.
  • Awarded A$2.4 million by the Learning and Teaching Performance Fund to fund teaching and learning initiatives, including curriculum renewal projects and online subject development.
  • Carrick Citations for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning awarded to three Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering staff.
  • The Indian Students Association often organises festivals andcelebrations, which include artistic performances by students andsometimes even staff members. They are currently working on developinga website which will improve communication with members.
