Research strengths

ECU’s research strategies include concentrating research in areas of strength and excellence; engaging widely with local, national and international institutions, industry and community partners, and all levels of government; establishing and partnering in research centres; appointing researchers who are leaders in their fields and commercialising applied outcomes.

Research underpins human advancement and ECU is committed to undertaking high-quality research which has strong social, economic, environmental and cultural impact.

The two “pillars” of ECU’s research policy are concentration and collaboration. Identifying the University’s areas of research strength has enabled a concentration of expertise and effort that is contributing to policy development, improving professional practice and delivering tangible outcomes in the areas of:

  • Health and Wellness
  • Education
  • Environment and Sustainability
  • Electronic Engineering and ICT
  • Social and Community
  • Business and Society
  • Communications and Creative Arts
  • Security, Law and Justice.

ECU’s research in these fields meshes with and contributes to both Australian and State Government identified research priority areas.

Collaboration has a dual focus:
  • research across Faculties and Schools within ECU; and
  • research with an increasing range of external partners.

Broadening an already extensive network of collaborations, major new research partnerships have been established, including with State and Federal Centres of Excellence, CSIRO Collaborative Research Flagships and Australian Research Council (ARC) Research Networks.

Located on the Joondalup campus, ECU's Graduate Research School provides support to research master’s and doctoral students, their supervisors and the faculties.
