Heart & soul of my life: Aberlife!

University: Aberystwyth University, UK

Overall experience

Great campus, great arts centre, great students union, beautiful location, beside the sea (enjoy seasports).
The town is dominated by students, hence it's the best chance to get international exposure and build support with different cultured students.
National library of Wales is nearby.
Cheap food and good accomodation costs.
A very recognised University with great support from academic staff.
Remember you go to uni to have the best time in your life, make the best use of this opportunity. Work hard, know your limitations, don't go swimming in the sea if you're drunk, obey the laws, respect your friends and most importantly keep your own respect. have fun, but study hard and pass with great results. Let this time of your life be the best, so when you look back you have nothing to regret. Best of luck!

Your study experience

Top class environment for studies, best facilities, helpful staff and great teaching staff around. You will get around 20 hours of teaching per week. Remember to work hard and study hard as you come to unito get a degree with a goos grade and not just for fun. I did an MBA in Aber at Cledwyn Building.

Your life experience

National library of Wales is in Aberystwyth close to the University. Hugh Owen is the other biggest library on campus. You find computer rooms everywhere and many are open 24 hours.
Bar's excellent with many cheap drinks on event nights and great sports facilities all round. I mostly stayed in uni accomodation.
Clavendon (includes shower and toilet in room) is costly at around £78 per week. The best is Court Manor and PIM - its average rate abotu £60-70 per week.
It's best to stay shread as it's more cost effective.
Both town and uni accomodations have their advantages and disadvantages. There are events every day, from reloads, cashbacks, saturday night events (e.g. beach party, back to school), comedy nights, cinemas and theatres (in the Arts Centre - best one in Wales). You could watch cinemas and theatres for free if you do ushering/know the staff in advance! Loads of clubs and societies; name it and you have it, and guess what, you can be a member for very cheap (around 3 pounds per year!) You have societies for trekking, walking, rugby, cricket, seasports (as uni is besides coast), drama, etc.
There's a beautiful church, St Mikes, where students go for spiritual benefits and councellors who give free guidance in the students union for any problems, and a nightline for students which is confidential. Aberystwyth rocks all night, if not at the union than in town at the Royal Pier, Yokos, E.Bay and many other pubs open till 4 in the morning! Enjoy the weekends though.

Job prospects

Many do get a job when they return back, but quite a few have to first stay back in Aber. there are free careers services in uni which help you get a job.
