I am happy that I can experience such a wonderful study period which helps for a great career.
Selection process and gaining admission
For the purpose of admission into the SSP Program, GRE and TOEFL scores are not compulsory, though beneficial to one’s chances of getting through. I had already written the above mentioned exams a year before but had not used them to apply at that time. My preparation for GRE/TOEFL involved using guides such as Barron’s and Princeton Review though I did not attend any coaching classes. If one’s application was considered, the representatives from the SSP programme conducted personal interviews with the candidates to ascertain whether the course and the candidate are suited to each other or not. The visa procedures for both the US and Singapore were fairly simple, and my interview was very basic. Getting air tickets was pretty easy too, as the course was paying for my airfare to-and-from the US, apart from taking care of tuition fees, accommodation, and a monthly stipend. Singapore Airlines offered an excellent student discounted rate as well, which only served to complement their excellent service. I landed first at the San Francisco International Airport, where the SSP representatives were there to greet us. They had arranged for transport from the airport to the university, which was in Palo Alto, a good hour’s journey away.
The program was excellently structured, if a little intensive. The professors at both Stanford University and NTU were among the very best in the world, and it was a privilege to have studied under them. Everything about the course was top-notch, from the faculty, to the coursework and content, to the comfortable and fairly luxurious accommodation accorded to us, both in the US as well as in Singapore. The ease of use and ready availability of reference materials at the library was particularly comforting, as were the various sports and co-curricular activities on offer. It is a really intensive course, however, and leaves no time for pursuing a part-time job. However, since the program takes care of all the costs and provides a stipend on top of it, there really is not a need for one. Both San Francisco and Singapore are among the most “happening” places and students can enjoy a very vibrant social life. I would heartily endorse this course to all students interested in environmental science, as it combines the finest education in the world with a diverse and multi-ethnic student mix, and what is more, it is all paid for.
The university was extremely helpful when it came to job applications and streamlined the process to make it easier for us. This meant we could concentrate more on our coursework while the university took care of a lot of the application formalities. Of course, as with most top universities in the world, it attracted some of the best global organizations to scout for recruits. The alumni network is extremely strong and well-represented across industries and are of immense use in all matters ranging form placements to finding accommodation, among others.
