B.A. in Earth and Environmental Science
Study mode: Full Time |
This major is a synthesis of the sciences and provides an excellent, broad-based technical education. Specific areas of strength include sedimentology, structural geology, exploration geophysics, organic geochemistry, petroleum geology, and igneous petrology. Courses in physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, and petroleum engineering complement the programs in geosciences. These programs provide a sound foundation in the basic sciences while retaining an emphasis on the energy-related fields of exploration, environment and resources. This program provides the flexibility to pursue graduate education or to enter careers where geology is an essential component; it is also a good start for a business (M.B.A.) or law degree (J.D.). Although most professional careers in the geosciences require a graduate degree, the undergraduate program is flexible enough to allow many other career options. This program can lead to a wide variety of job choices including industrial, government, legal and academic careers. The petroleum industry has been the major employer, but careers in environmental work-both monitoring and remediation-are becoming more important. Opportunities exist in state and federal agencies as well as with specialized companies.
