Accelerated B.A./M.A in Applied Sociology

The accelerated B.A./M.A. is designed for academically superior undergraduate students at UMBC in any major. Accelerated B.A./M.A. students may take up to 9 credits in their senior year that count for both the B.A. and M.A. degrees. This reduces the number of credits required for the M.A. degree. For example, students who complete the maximum of 9 graduate credits in their senior year need to complete only 21 additional credits for the M.A. degree.
Accelerated B.A./M.A. in Program in Historical Studies

The ancient studies department participates in the accelerated B.A./M.A. program in historical studies by offering courses at the 600 and 700 levels. Students interested in earning the B.A. in Ancient Studies and the M.A. in Historical Studies (with an emphasis on ancient history) should consult with the faculty of the history and ancient studies departments.

This program focuses on cultural anthropology, providing students with an understanding of the diversity of cultural worlds, human social organization and social structure, and social research methods. The courses help students gain an understanding of the complexity of current events within the U.S. and internationally, and the importance of recognizing and weighing equally cultural values and ideas from across the globe. The course offerings examine topics ranging from anthropological theory and the positioning of knowledge and power, to the application of anthropology to urban social issues, health care, and public policy. As anthropology majors, students gain knowledge, skills, and conceptual tools that prepare them for a wide range of careers, professional training programs, and graduate school. Anthropology is a popular major for people intending to pursue professional study in medicine, psychology, education, business, and human services (e.g., social work, nursing, etc). The majors also have entered MA and PhD graduate programs in anthropology across the country, as well as the MA in Applied Sociology program at UMBC. As with most liberal arts majors, undergraduate majors in anthropology who wish to engage in anthropology professionally generally continue to graduate school. For anthropology majors who do not intend to continue to graduate school, many government, non-profit, and private sector job opportunities are available, especially in positions that involve human interaction and where an understanding of multicultural issues is beneficial. This includes employment at social welfare, health-related, and program evaluation agencies and organizations, private marketing firms, and companies involved in international business.

This program covers areas such as stage management, scenery, costuming, lighting and sound. These majors have numerous opportunities to work as design assistants and, with recommendations, designers on faculty directed productions. Other opportunities include work as a stage manager, master carpenter, master electrician, props master, draper, crafts person, stitcher.

This program has a stronger emphasis on environmental policy and on the political, economic and cultural aspects of environmental problems, as well as on conservation strategies, risk analysis, environmental ethics and aesthetics. Opportunities for employment and graduate education focus more heavily on policy and management issues, including planning, natural resource management, urban issues, transportation, environmental health, environmental justice, environmental economics and sustainable development.

This program will help students to receive a solid grounding in educational and pedagogical skills, and music theory and history, preparing them for vocation in teaching and/or further graduate studies in the area of music education. Through field observations and hands-on teaching experiences, the students will receive clear guidance to develop their own teaching skills and philosophies. Students are encouraged to take the teacher certification exam during their course of studies at UMBC, though are not required to do so. The degree uniquely combines courses from both the music and the education departments to provide a comprehensive overview of theories and practices in both fields. Faculty specializations include studio teaching, aesthetic education and extensive outreach activities. Special opportunities exist in the form of internships and fellowships.
