Advanced Master of Science Degree in Occupational Therapy

This program prepares therapists to be advanced clinicians, program developers, researchers and educators. Applicants must be certified as Occupational Therapists via the procedures specified by the NBCOT. This is a 36 semester hour program consisting of specific required course work that includes a thesis/project in the students specialty area of practice, as well as electives related to the clinical practice area. Students have 12 credits of required coursework and 24 elective credits. Six elective credits are interdisciplinary and taken in other departments at the university or transferred in from another institution. Elective credits can be used to take courses in specialty practice areas. Students can receive a Professional Enhancement Course Completion Certificate (see Professional Enhancement Course Completion Certificates) in a variety of areas through their elective coursework while completing the Master?s Degree.

This program focuses on Applied Communication for Professional Educators. This degree prepares students who are interested in a career in education and training, but who are not planning to pursue a conventional teacher certification track. Students in this major are provided critical knowledge and skills in how to construct and facilitate effective learning and change situations in organizational, community, and professional contexts.

This track emphasizes a well-rounded liberal arts background and a comprehensive understanding of the world?s varied systems of visual representation and communication. The curriculum allows students to apply the approaches and perspectives of linguistic anthropology and socio-cultural anthropology (and potentially, other areas of study) toward the study and practice of visual communication. It is well suited to those with interests in popular culture, the fine arts, documentary and ethnographic film, feature film, all forms of artistic performance, tele-visual communication (including both broadcast and narrowcast forms), home media, and alternative media.

This program is intended to give students a strong foundation in archaeology, biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and sociocultural anthropology. Each subdiscipline requires the development of broadly applicable skills, including formulating hypotheses, developing research programs and proposals, applying theories to the interpretation of data, and gathering ethnographic information through participant observation. It prepares students for careers in such fields as teaching, public administration, social work, urban planning, journalism, mass media, business, and law. The courses in archaeology train students well for careers in cultural resources management and historic preservation. It is also an excellent preparation for careers and activities that call for cultural sensitivity and understanding of cultural differences, such as the teaching of English to speakers of other languages, work with immigrant communities, and work with international non-profit and non-governmental organizations.
B.A. in Anthropology - Human Biology Track

This program prepares students for careers in medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, optometry, podiatry, and other allied health fields and students preparing for these fields sometimes find the traditional science majors too restrictive. This track also includes required courses in biology and human anatomy and physiology; and provides several options for completing other science courses that fulfill admission requirements to professional schools in the health sciences. It also encourages students to take health/biology-related courses in psychology, sociology, history, political science, and the humanities.

The Digital Media concentration allows the students to focus on the use of computer technologies in fine art. Students in this concentration take courses throughout the University, including those in the programs of Art, Architecture, Film & Media Arts, Music, Theater, Dance, etc. This wide range of courses fosters the development of an interdisciplinary approach to image-making that considers both the aesthetic and technical sides of this genre. Students graduating with this concentration are able to pursue graduate studies in the fine arts, work as professional artists, find employment in the numerous computer-based fields of art and communication, or work in galleries or museums.

This program exposes students? to the economist?s way of thinking about social problems and behavior. It helps students to understand the economic aspect of current events and public policy and is good preparation for careers in law and business. It also provides an opportunity for students to network with other students and with practicing economists in learning more about economics and finding internships and employment opportunities.

This program allows students to examine a range of approaches to key topics in the social sciences. Students choose from introductory courses and supplement them with a variety of intermediate and upper-level electives. Students may choose courses that focus either on geography or urban studies or combine the two. Students examine the growth and development of cities and regions, environment and society, spatial analysis and industrial location, and the major distributions of physical and natural phenomena across the globe. Students may also choose to explore the social, political, economic, and historic aspects of urban life, including international comparisons of urban society and the policies that governments have devised to address urban problems.
