Associate in Arts in Letters, Arts and Sciences

This Program's objective is to broaden the student's understanding, interests, and skills; to help the student become a more responsible, productive member of his/her family and community; and to offer a degree program with sufficient electives to permit some specialization according to the student?s interests or career plans. Letters, Arts, and Sciences is a complete two-year degree major. However, graduates who later seek admission to baccalaureate degree majors may apply credits toward the new degree. In addition to a wide variety of baccalaureate majors offered at the University Park campus, graduates of the Letters, Arts, and Sciences major may qualify for admission to the baccalaureate degree majors in Behavioral Sciences, Elementary Education, Humanities, or Public Policy offered at Penn State Harrisburg. Or they may qualify for any of a number of baccalaureate degree majors offered by Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, in business, the liberal arts, and sciences. This program gives students the flexibility to create a program tailored to their specific academic and career goals. Students will benefit from study in English composition and effective speaking, mathematics, and general education courses in arts, humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and science.

This Program provides a foundation in business that, through two options, prepares graduates for either entrance to the Bachelor of Science in Business (BSB) programs in business or for direct entry into the work place. The primary objective of this major is to provide a business-oriented program with sufficient communicative and mathematical skills, socially relevant course work, and specific business specialties to develop a well-rounded and knowledgeable graduate. Penn State Harrisburg offers the General Business Option, which provides an introductory foundation to core aspects of the business environment while also preparing students for future transfer into the Bachelor of Science in Business (BSB). This program is a management-focused program that develops skills through course work in mathematics, communication, and general education, and through course work in the business disciplines. Graduates should be prepared for a variety of entry-level positions in the broad career field of business.

This Program embodies the four tenets of our conceptual framework: constructivism, authenticity, reflectivity, and standards-based curriculum. constructivism entails a student-centered approach in which teachers help learners build their own understandings. Authenticity refers to developing professional and pedagogical skills in authentic classroom settings; for example, in the junior and senior years prior to student teaching, the program offers extensive field experiences in a variety of settings enrolling students with diverse backgrounds and needs. Reflectivity relates to consciously analyzing course content and one's own learning for the purpose of deeper understanding and self-improvement. Standards-based curriculum means that our candidates are steeped in Pennsylvania Academic Standards as well as the standards of relevant professional organizations. Taken together, these tenets enable its students to become lifelong reflective professionals committed to the learning of all students. Prior to the full-time student teaching experience in the senior year, candidates are expected to complete all other courses required for certification, including two field placements. On-campus courses are scheduled three or four days a week, while field experiences in nearby schools are scheduled part-time, three or four days per week. Elementary teachers introduce children to learning through the basics of numbers, language, science, and social studies. They design classroom presentations to meet the needs and abilities of their students. They also work with children independently. There is a Early Childhood Education Certification it requires a minimum of 133 credits is required.

This Program is intended to familiarize students with the general frameworks and multidisciplinary theories that define the area of security and related risk analyses. Courses in the major will engage students in the challenges and problems associated with assuring information confidentiality and integrity, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of various methods for assessing and mitigating associated risk. It provides a grounding in the analysis and modeling efforts used in information search, visualization, and creative problem solving. This knowledge is supplemented through an examination of the legal, ethical, and regulatory issues related to security that includes analyzing privacy laws, internal control and regulatory policies, as well as basic investigative processes and principles. Such understanding is applied to venues that include transnational terrorism, cyber crimes, financial fraud, risk mitigation, and security and crisis management. It also includes overviews of the information technology that plays a critical role in identifying, preventing and responding to security-related events. Three options are available on the University Park campus. At Penn State Harrisburg, options in Intelligence Analysis and Modeling and in Information and Cyber Security are available. The major provides a grounding in the analysis and modeling efforts used in information search, visualization, and creative problem solving. This knowledge is supplemented through an examination of the legal, ethical and regulatory issues related to security that includes analyzing privacy laws, internal control and regulatory policies, as well as basic investigative process and principles.

This Program offers students the opportunity to study literature in an interdisciplinary context where the relationships among literature and art, history, music, philosophy, media, and American Studies can be investigated. The major offers courses in American, British, and world literatures, emphasizing their cultural and historical contexts, as well as teaching students to interpret them from a variety of critical perspectives. Small classes in both creative and expository writing encourage students to develop their writing skills by working closely with faculty. With its emphases on interpretive skills, creativity, and writing, the General English Option provides a foundation for careers in such fields as publishing, public relations, communication, government and law, as well as a strong basis for graduate education. It is a broad-based program for the student who desires to study English in depth. In the General English option, the study of language, literature, and writing provides a foundation upon which many occupational skills can be developed. Some students start their careers as writers and editors, while others develop analytical skills that take them to positions in business, industry, and government.
B. HUM. in English with Secondary Education

It will prepare students to teach English and the Humanities in secondary schools grades 7 to 12. English and Humanities teachers will be required to study and instruct the history and study of language, English, American and world literature, written and oral composition, drama, speech communications, literary criticism, techniques of research in the field of English, writing, and relationships of English to other fields of knowledge.

This Program provide concentrations in various areas such as actuarial science, management science/operation research, statistics, teaching, and preparation for graduate studies. It to prepare students for employment in business, industry, and government immediately after graduation, but graduate study in mathematics or related disciplines is also a viable alternative. Mathematical modeling is emphasized, and all students are required to take courses in statistics and computer science. The professionally oriented Actuarial Science specialty offers career opportunities in the insurance industry, and graduates of the program are prepared for up to two exams administered by the Society of Actuaries. Management Science/Operations Research is designed for students interested in applying mathematics, statistics, and computer techniques to problems within business and industry. Graduate studies preparation provides the broad mathematical background requisite for postgraduate studies in mathematical sciences, statistics, or related disciplines. Advanced study will lead to increased opportunities found within higher education, business, and industry. The Statistics concentration prepares a graduate for employment as a bachelor?s-level statistician in state or federal government, academic research, or business. Also, it provides students with a background for continued study.

This Program offers two options: Social and Human Services and Interdisciplinary Social Science. The major helps students prepare for careers that provide direct service to individuals in need of assistance. These careers are in a variety of human services, in both the public and private sectors, and in personnel-related positions such as human resources. Graduates may also pursue advanced degrees in fields such as community psychology, social work, human resource management, human services, and counseling. The strengths of the program include: internships directly related to the student's area of interest, flexibility in course selection that allows students to focus on particular interests, a solid foundation of knowledge on which to build skills, and skill development courses. It provides a base of theoretical knowledge and the hands-on skills needed to apply that knowledge effectively in working with people. It aims to prepare graduates for a career that provides direct service to individuals in need of assistance. These opportunities exist in human service settings under a variety of job titles, such as social service technician, case management aide, social work assistant, residential counselor, alcohol or drug abuse counselor, mental health technician, child abuse worker, community outreach worker, and gerontology aide. In community and government settings, human service positions can be found in welfare, Medicaid, job training programs, or other agencies that evaluate client need and provide benefits. Finally, graduates of the Applied Behavioral Science program may find opportunities in both the private and public sectors as human resource professionals.

This Program is a multidisciplinary program that examines the development of individuals and families across the life span. It enables students to prepare for professional, managerial, or scientific roles in health and human services professions, in public and nonprofit agencies, and in business and industry, as well as for advanced professional or graduate study. Students obtain a broad background in individual and family development across the life span. Courses emphasize biological, psychological, social/cultural, and economic aspects of development. Through course work and undergraduate internships or research projects, students develop skills relevant to career objectives, such as counseling, human assessment, program planning and evaluation, and research. This option focuses on the acquisition and application of scientific knowledge about development and family functioning across the life span for the purposes of enhancing personal and family development. Typical employment settings include preschools, daycare centers, hospital programs for children, youth, and families, institutional and community mental health programs for individuals and families, programs for abused or neglected children and adolescents, women's resource centers, human resources programs, employee assistance programs, nursing homes, area agencies on aging and other community settings for older adults, and public welfare and family service agencies.
B.S. in Mathematical Sciences with Secondary Education Option

This Program prepares registered nurses as professional practitioners in areas of health promotion and maintenance, illness care, and rehabilitation. The major in Nursing is accredited by The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). Part-time and full-time students with a registered nurse license may enroll in the major at Penn State Harrisburg. Senate legislation 42-97 Credit by Portfolio Assessment enables students to receive credit for certain prescribed Nursing courses. Students must carry liability insurance and have an annual health examination, and be certified in adult and child CPR when enrolled in any clinical courses. Students also are responsible for their own transportation to clinical settings and may need the use of a car. Criminal background and child abuse history clearances are required. This program offers the Registered Nurse the opportunity to earn a baccalaureate degree in Nursing at Penn State Harrisburg. The RN/BS option can assist students in enhancing their nursing education to help meet changes in the health care field. It is designed for Registered Nurses from either an associate degree program or a diploma from a nursing school.

This program emphasizes the scientific study of human behavior in areas such as cognition, development, learning, physiology, personality, and social processes. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a broad background in psychological theory and research and to develop the analytical and critical thinking skills necessary to be good consumers of scientific information. The program exposes students to a number of areas of psychology but allows flexibility in the specific courses that are taken in each sub-area. Students are also required to obtain applied experience by completing an internship or by assisting faculty with their research. Elective credits can be used for additional internship or research experience. It prepares students for careers in local, state, and federal government and for entry-level psychological services positions in human service, applied behavior, human resources, and related fields. The Psychology program also provides a strong background for graduate education at both the master's and the doctoral level in counseling, social work, and many areas of psychology.

This Program is intended for students who want a strong sociology background in preparation for work in government or social agencies or who are interested in graduate work in sociology. In addition to developing analytical and critical thinking skills, students will gain an understanding of various substantive areas of the field including social structure and institutions, social change, social class, gender, race, and ethnicity. Sociologists are employed in such diverse fields as social and human service agencies, nonprofit and advocacy organizations, research and policy work, telecommunications, human resource management, and college teaching. This major is appropriate for work in any environment where an understanding of social structures and social dynamics is required. It is designed for students who are interested in either subsequent graduate work in sociology or who want a strong sociology background in preparation for entering the work force. A degree in Sociology will provide opportunities to work in environments where an understanding of social structure and social dynamics is required. For example, employers in fields such as criminal justice, human services and personnel, and industrial relations often employ sociology graduates in a variety of capacities for their understanding of social issues and people. Businesses often look for graduates who possess good analytical, writing and oral skills to enter positions as management trainees. Finally, positions may be available in government services at the federal, state, and local levels.

This Program prepares students to meet the requirements to be certified for the Social Studies Instructional I Certificate as established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The major prepares students to teach history, government, economics, geography, psychology, sociology, and anthropology. Students are challenged to prepare for teaching assignments at the middle and high school level, and in diverse settings characterized as rural, urban, and suburban. The art and science of teaching in secondary schools is undergoing significant transformation as new technologies, time allocation for instruction, and new instructional strategies are impacting the delivery of social studies instruction. The Secondary Education Social Studies major will prepare students to teach social studies in secondary schools grades 7 to 12. As secondary school teachers, they will delve more deeply into subject matter introduced broadly during the elementary years.

This Program gives students the opportunity to create individualized academic programs that fit their abilities, interests, and career goals. Courses in the Interdisciplinary Humanities major can come from a variety of disciplines, including American Studies, Art, Art History, Communications, English, Foreign Languages, History, Interdisciplinary Humanities, Philosophy, and Theatre. Through study of these fields, students gain crucial knowledge about world history and culture and hone their analytic and writing skills while courses in intercultural communications, graphic design, desktop publishing, or writing for the web teach students how to apply their knowledge effectively. The Business Administration minor complements the broad strengths of the Interdisciplinary Humanities major by giving students instruction in economics, finance, marketing, and/or management.
