Associate of Arts with an emphasis in Early Childhood Education

This program focuses on providing students with the knowledge, skills, and training required to prepare educators to work with young children. The program incorporates the standards from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). They will be able to: develop the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the increased challenges and responsibilities faced in today?s early childhood settings, learn how to incorporate the best teaching competencies and practices in their work environment, learn to recognize the diverse needs and learning styles of all children in today?s multicultural early childhood settings, learn how to be responsive to the individual and unique needs of children with special needs, attain a greater assurance of job security and expand their potential for career advancement, increase their computer and technology skills and create a foundation for lifelong learning. It is suitable for individuals with high school degrees or General Education Diplomas (GED) who wish to enter the field of early childhood education or practicing early childhood educators who wish to obtain an associate?s degree and/or increase their level of expertise in the field or practicing paraprofessionals who wish to obtain an associate?s degree in early childhood education and increase their level of expertise in the field.

The entry-level doctor of physical therapy (D.P.T.) combined degree is a six-year program in which students complete 90 credits, 30 of which must be upper division, with the appropriate prerequisites, prior to entering the physical therapy program. Candidates will follow a prescribed course of study in either undergraduate biology or athletic training and will receive a bachelor of science after successful completion of the first year of study in the doctor of physical therapy program. Students will receive a doctoral degree in physical therapy after they complete three years of training at the College of Allied Health and Nursing.

The NSU doctor of dental medicine (D.M.D), offered through the Health Professions Division?s College of Dental Medicine, trains students to become highly qualified primary care practitioners capable of delivering comprehensive dental care to patients of all ages. Students may go on for advanced education in fields such as oral surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics, or dental public health, among other specializations.

This seven-year program is a combined program; students will follow a three-year prescribed course of study in the undergraduate biology major. Students will be awarded a bachelor of science degree on successful completion of the first year of medical education at the College of Osteopathic Medicine. In the eight-year program, students will complete the four-year undergraduate biology major and be awarded a bachelor of science degree before starting their medical education. Students in both programs will receive the doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.) degree after completion of successful study at the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The program leading to the doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) in clinical psychology focuses on the analysis of current topics and problems in clinical psychology. Much of the research conducted within the program involves the development and rigorous investigation of innovative assessment and intervention for clinical problems. The program curriculum is anchored in the body of psychological knowledge and provides a firm basis in statistics, research design, and experimental research methodology, as well as supervised experience in a clinical setting. The student proceeds through training that culminates in an independent research dissertation. Through these experiences, the program imparts the knowledge and skill required for the student to assume the role of academician, researcher, and practicing clinical psychologist.

The primary goal of the doctor of psychology (Psy.D.) is to offer academic, practicum, internship, and research experiences directly relevant to the practice of clinical psychology. The training retains the important scientific base on which professional competence and knowledge rest, has students participate in ongoing research, and prepares them to be lifelong consumers of research. Clinical expertise is molded by a sequence of courses on assessment and intervention, both theory and technique, supplemented by practicum experiences with clients in a variety of settings under intensive supervision. The Psy.D., through its curriculum, trains students to perform as clinicians, private practitioners, supervisors, mental health consultants, administrators of human service programs, instructors, and members of a research team.

The Specialist Program (Psy.S.) in School Psychology was developed, in part, in response to the national and state shortage of school psychologists and the increased public attention being paid to the important role that psychologists play in the schools. The program is enriched through its more than 30 distinguished full-time faculty members, including nationally renowned professionals who instruct students for three years of coursework (including practica) and one year of internship. The computer science (CS) major deals with the systematic study of algorithms and data structures. The CS curriculum is consistent with recommendations outlined by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and emphasizes laboratory experience as a major component of courses. By integrating theory, abstraction, and design, the curriculum bridges the gap between hardware and software issues. The program provides students with an opportunity to gain in-depth, rigorous instruction in the following nine areas of computer science (as specified by the national ACM/IEEE Joint Curriculum Task Force): algorithms and data structures, architecture, artificial intelligence and robotics, database and information retrieval, human-computer communication, numerical and symbolic computation, operating systems, programming languages, and software methodology and engineering.
