This program focused on this specialty and write and AM thesis. Students wishing to continue at Harvard for the PhD will apply in the normal manner, and their applications will be considered in the customary way. Students admitted to the PhD program will be granted credit for work done at Harvard or elsewhere according to departmental guidelines, which normally grant credit for two graduate courses taken before entering the PhD program.

This programs are flexible to meet individual needs but typically consist of the following. First year: an advanced language course in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, or, for students who have not previously studied the language, an appropriate beginning course; and six half-courses on East Asian history, political, social, and economic developments, on literature or other cultural manifestations, or courses offering methodological or comparative insights on East Asia. Second year: a full course continuing the Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language; a seminar devoted to the writing of a research paper on a chosen topic; five other approved half-courses. Students with a special interest in Vietnam are normally required to attain proficiency in the Chinese or Japanese language.

This program focuses on research creating management theory and knowledge that is relevant to management practice. Through a curriculum covering multiple disciplines and functional perspectives and through thesis work that typically includes field-based research, students master concepts and research skills that enable them to do research that is directly relevant to business problems. Students in Management choose at least one discipline in which to anchor their research, usually economics, sociology, or organizational behavior. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of Management is its multidisciplinary perspective. As the phenomena of general management cuts across economics, psychology, sociology, organizational behavior, and administrative sciences, our students develop discipline-based expertise in at least two substantive domains. Our students? dissertations typically focus on innovation, entrepreneurship, general management, comparative organizations, organizational learning, development of influence networks in strategic alliances, and transition from entrepreneurial to professional management in domestic and international settings.

This program is presented in a problem-based approach in which concepts are mastered through group discussion and analysis of real-patient cases. Courses are interdisciplinary, and small group tutorial sessions augment material from lectures, laboratories and independent study. This program highlights a range of increasingly complex issues--from shifts in cultural practices and racial, ethnic, and linguistic diversity to the implications of these shifts for human or social development and education. Central to the concentration is research on the factors that put children or youth at a disadvantage, and those assets--family, community, or cultural--that support high levels of academic, social, and moral development; healthy individuals; and effective schools. The concentration prepares students to investigate these issues from multiple levels: the individual level; the school level and the neighborhood/community level in which schools are embedded; and the national and international levels, where cross-cultural concerns, including globalization, immigration, multiculturalism, and citizenship, are of paramount importance.
