Anthropology and Sociology at UWA offers a variety of courses focusing on the following geographical areas: South East Asia, especially Indonesia and the Philippines, Australian society, including Aboriginal Australia. There are two Level 1 units in Anthropology. Students can study only one of the units if thye wish, to complete a major in Anthropology, students will need to study both level one units. In semester one you examine what it means to be human and cover areas such as culture, identity and social life. The second semester unit explores global change and local responses from anthropological and sociological perspectives. Upper level units include the study of applied anthropology, ethnographic film, religion, legal anthropology, sex and aggression across the lifespan, medical anthropology and sociology, and migration, culture and identity.

In the first level of Archaeology students will be introduced to the history, methods and theory of archaeological study. Practical sessions are arranged to provide a hands-on introduction to archaeological objects and tools of trade and they may be able to join vacation field excursions. First semester Level 1 Archaeology is an introduction to the principles and methods of archaeological research and to the evidence for becoming human. Second semester Level 1 Archaeology is an introduction to the origins of agriculture, the development of civilisations and archaeology in Australia. Students will examine the evidence for agriculture and the rise of civilisations in different parts of the world and evaluate the theories explaining these developments. In the latter part of the unit students will be introduced to archaeology in Australia including Aboriginal, European and maritime topics. Level 2 units include a practical course in which students will carry out an excavation and write a report on your results as well as courses on management archaeology, historical archeology, Viking archaeology and regional units on Australian, Asian, Pacific and European archaeology.

Students will have the opportunity to do their third year of language study at the Ocean University of China in Shandong Province. An intensive six week course over summer at the Yunnan University of Economics and Finance, Kunming, is also available.

This course introduces students to the many cultures, societies and politics of Asia, including China, Indonesia and Japan. It explores the impact of the great religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam and investigates the dramatic changes that colonialism and revolutions have brought to the people of the region. This course will give students an in-depth understanding of the forces that are shaping the Asian region now. It examines topics as diverse as popular culture in Japan, gender relations in Indonesia and the media boom in China. Terrorism and human rights issues are also explored, as is Australia's increasingly important relationships with Asian nations.

An intensive six week course over summer at the Yunnan University of Economics and Finance, Kunming, is also available. Students can study Chinese within the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Arts (Asian Studies) or the Bachelor of Arts (Communication Studies). The Chinese program offers a Chinese major as well as a fourth-year honours program. Beginner's level units cover basic language and communication skills with reference to everyday situations in China such as greetings, self-introduction, hobbies and eating out. Intermediate level units cover more advanced language skills including letter writing, comprehending basic texts and expressing ideas about familiar social topics. Advanced and Specialist level units allow students to develop a wide range of language skills including translation in the context of contemporary social and cultural issues.
