The University of Newcastle became an autonomous institution in 1965. There are about 26,000 students on campus of which 3,500 are international students. The University maintains two establishments in and around the coastal city of Newcastle. The larger of the two campuses is located in Newcastle and the second one is along the central coastline at Ourimbah. The University also manages a business school, music conservatorium and a legal centre. Undergraduate and postgraduate programs are delivered through five faculties: Business and Law, Education and Arts, Engineering and Built Environment, Health, and Science and Information Technology.
