Course description This is an interdisciplinary program that introduces students to the issues that concern the developing world such as poverty and inequality and the theories, policies and practical measures introduced to address these issues. Central issues and themes that are examined include the history, sociology and political economy of development; the causes of poverty and global inequality; the relationship between the environment and development; the debates about globalisation and the relationships of international institutions to developing countries.
Entry requirementsStudents must have completed Year 12 or equivalent. Students from China and Pakistan should have completed an accredited or an equivalent bachelor degree. African and Singaporean students should have undertaken a minimum of two GCE "A" level subjects at one sitting, while those from Malaysia must have a minimum of two academic STPM "principal" level subjects at one sitting. Students from USA must have undertaken SATs (Math and Verbal) or ACTs, and provide proof of graduation from High School. They must also satisfy the English language requirement as follows: IELTS an overall minimum score of 6.5 is required, together with a minimum score of 6.0 in each of the sub-tests of listening, reading, speaking and writing or a TOEFL score (paper-based test) of at least 577, with a minimum score of 4.5 in the TWE, a TOEFL score (computer-based test) of at least 233, with a minimum score of 5.0 in the essay component, or a TOEFL score (internet test) of at least 90, with a minimum score of 24 in Writing or CULT an overall minimum score of 70 is required, with a minimum score of 17.0 in each of the sub-tests of listening, reading, speaking and writing.
Application details Students currently completing an Australian Year 12 (either in Australia or offshore) or NZ NCEA Level 3 qualification or the International Baccalaureate in Australia must apply through Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). Students from other countries should complete the application form and attach certified copies of original documents, including academic transcripts from high school and any post-secondary study as well as original copies of English language test results. An application fee of AUD $100 applies to each paper application form and is payable by credit card, bank cheque or bank draft made out to The University of New South Wales.
